PROJECT: All In The Details Pants

My 10 year old does not like jeans, zippers or buttons. He likes soft knits or sweatpants the best. Of course finding great looking sweatpants is hard. For the past week I have been working on making him a few pairs of pants, which were supposed to be for Christmas. But as usual, I tried to do too much. After Christmas though, I had the time to slowly work on the pattern and started sewing.  I made a pair from fleece and two more from a sweatshirt knit fabric I found at Joann's.

These turned out the best, with the most details and the best fit. I had to keep adjusting the pattern (which was half self drafted half hacked together from a couple other patterns), just small tweaks for better and smoother fit. I really should start making muslins. Obviously patience is not one of my virtues.

Once I had the basic pattern, I played around with details. One of the lessons I am learning when it comes to sewing that details can make or break a project. It is the little things that count, not just the fabric.

Details like adding top stitching and adding a bit of contrasting color.

Or cutting up the pattern to make segments that are sewn together add interest. It definitively takes more time and all that top stitching uses up a ton of thread, but I am starting to concentrate more on quality instead of quantity when it comes to projects. Which means I really need to start making muslins.

  4. Hello girls, I came from Totally Tutorials to check out the bleaching experiment... but I stayed to explore your thoughtful and eclectic posts. Wish I'd had this pants idea when my four boys were young. They too enjoyed comfy clothes, and it was, and still is, challenging to find good quality items, especially in a small town. I'm your newest follower. Greetings from New Brunswick, Canada!

I ran out yesterday to walmart to buy clearance sweatpants/gym pants for my almost 7 year old. he says jeans are too cold. he likes to be comfy and cozy! i definitely need to get to joannes and buy some of this fabric and make some of these pants. he would love them!

  6. This awesome! I have the same problem that my 8yr old son hates anything that's stiff and with zips. Thanks for the inspiration :)
